Local Area & Attractions

Walking & Cycling

Wensleydale and its neighbouring Swaledale provide walkers and cyclists with a plethora of opportunities to get out and about to explore the area. Cow Close sits on a footpath between Leyburn and Bellerby. We have maps on site to help you on your way and plenty of ideas if you want to explore further afield.

Why not try a walk to Tan Hill - England's highest pub, which starts and finishes in Keld, or explore the delights of Richmond on a town circular, visit Aysgarth Falls or just walk along the river to Middleham or Wensley. Just ask us if you would like advice or suggestions about where to go.

Opportunities for cyclists are just as varied as we are close to the 2014 Tour de France Route and the infamous Buttertubs pass. Neighbouring Swaledale is a mountain bike mecca with suitable routes for all riders. Richmond Cycling Club offer time trials (summer months) and weekly mountain bike rides are available with Dales Bike Centre.

There are several cycle routes in the local area and leaflets for these are available in our information kiosk. 2018 saw the 3rd and 4th Stages of the Tour de Yorkshire passing through Leyburn and its neighbouring towns and villages.

Getting Around

No car? No problem!  There are several transport methods to get you around the Dales.  The Little White Buses, the revived Wensleydale Railway and local taxi services. There are also plenty of routes suitable for cyclists of all abilities.

In the summer months there are buses running to Bedale, Northallerton, Masham, Hawes, Richmond and beyond. The Wensleydale railway runs on special occasions, weekends and Bank Holidays.
